old & abandoned

This weekend I came across this website: São Paulo Abandonada & Antiga (São Paulo abandoned and old).

A historian and a photographer (Glaucia Garcia de Carvalho and Douglas Nascimento, respectively) have created a catalogue of São Paulo's rundown and abandoned buildings, since 2009. The objective, according to the pair, is to preserve the memory of the city through its historic yet unrestored buildings and constructions. The photographed structures range from old mansions, schools, factories, hospitals, and even monuments.

Going through São Paulo, it is easy to miss these once grand buildings, a lot of times hidden amongst recent constructions. I think it's wonderful that these buildings are being documented in this site as many of them will probably be demolished. I have read that some buildings have already been restored, thanks to this site.

How different São Paulo would look if someone took an interest in its preservation.
